Product description

Handwoven rug from Nepal, made from recycled saris – as a runner or as a round rug.

What it is made of
Worn-out saris are torn into narrow strips and worked on the loom like yarn. Because every sari is patterned differently, the result is a run of colour that nobody designed – it comes from whatever happened to be on the pile. No two rugs therefore look the same.

Where it fits
In the hallway, beside the bed, in the kitchen, in a child's room. Sari rugs are flat-woven and lie still; they add no bulk and roll up easily.

Care
Shake out or vacuum. Dab stains locally with clean water. The colours may bleed slightly on the first wash – so wash it separately and cold.

Quality & Origin

From garment to rug
A sari measures five to six metres. Once it has grown too thin to wear, there is still a great deal of usable fabric left. In Nepal and India such saris are therefore collected, sorted and put to further use – as bags, as linings, and where enough material comes together, as rugs.

How it is made
Woven by hand in Nepal, in small craft workshops.

With your purchase you support fair working conditions and the reuse of existing materials.
