What the mantra means
"Om Mani Padme Hum" is the best-known mantra of Tibetan Buddhism and belongs to Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of compassion. Translated literally it means roughly "Om, jewel in the lotus, Hum" – what is meant is the union of wisdom and compassion. In Nepal you meet the mantra everywhere: carved into stone, on prayer wheels, on the walls of houses.

How they are traditionally used
Prayer flags are hung outdoors, at temples, on houses and at mountain passes. The idea behind it: the wind picks up the printed prayers and carries them in every direction – as a good wish for all living beings, not just for one's own family.

The colours fading over time is part of it. Old flags are traditionally not thrown away but left hanging or burnt; new ones are hung beside them. The fading is taken as a sign that the wishes are on their way.

What to bear in mind
Hang them so that they do not touch the ground – that is considered respectful. Outdoors they last one to two years depending on the weather, until the colours have clearly faded.

The five colours and their order
Prayer flags always carry the same five colours in the same sequence: blue for the sky, white for air and wind, red for fire, green for water, yellow for earth. The order is not decorative but fixed – it stands for the five elements of which, in Buddhist thought, everything consists.

How they are made
Printed by hand in Nepal, with traditional wood blocks or by screen print.
