Product description

This colourful placemat is made from recycled saris and cotton fabrics. The different strips of fabric are put together anew and worked into a hard-wearing textile – something new and unique made from materials that already existed.

Every placemat has its own combination of colours and patterns, which makes it a small one-off. On the table it creates a warm, lively atmosphere at once and brings a piece of Nepalese craft into your home.

The placemats are made fairly in Nepal and combine traditional handwork with sustainable upcycling.

Quality & Origin

How a sari becomes cloth
Weaving uses two systems of thread: the warp, tensioned lengthwise, and the weft, which runs across it. Here cotton forms the warp – that is what holds everything together. The sari is torn into narrow strips and woven in as the weft. So it supplies the colour, not the strength.

Which strip comes next is decided while the work is going on. That is why no pattern repeats.

How it is made
Woven by hand in Nepal, in small craft groups.

With your purchase you support fair working conditions and the reuse of existing fabrics.
