Product description

Hand-woven trivets in Nepalese natural fibres – as pot stands on the table or as wall decoration.

What they are made of
They are woven from moonj and kansh grass, two wild grasses that grow along riverbanks and on fallow land in Nepal. The stalks are cut, dried, then coiled around a core and stitched – the same technique used there for generations to make baskets and mats.

What they suit
As trivets for pots and pans – the thick grass structure keeps heat away well. Or on the wall, singly or in groups, as quiet decoration in natural tones.

Care
Wipe dry or shake out. Do not clean in the dishwasher and do not soak – natural fibres do not like standing water.

Quality & Origin

Two grasses from the lowlands
Kansh is the grass that turns whole river plains white with blossom in autumn across Nepal and northern India – an image that marks the start of the season there. Moonj grows in much the same way and supplies the firmer stalks. Both grow wild, need no cultivation, and shoot again by themselves after cutting.

How it is made
Woven by hand in Nepal, in small craft groups, often by women's collectives.

With your purchase you support traditional weaving craft and fair working conditions.
