Product description

A distinctive hand-formed paper in lokta fibre, made traditionally in Nepal. The lokta plant (Daphne bholua) grows at altitude in the Himalayas and regenerates after harvesting – the shrub itself is never felled.

Lokta paper is known for its toughness, natural texture and long life. That makes it ideal for creative projects, gift wrapping or special paper work.

Every sheet is a one-off: pattern, texture and thickness can vary slightly. The naturally frayed edges are part of it too – they come from drying on wooden frames and underline the handmade character.

Ideal for:
– gift wrap and packaging
– scrapbooking, journaling and collage
– DIY projects, covers, labels or decoration

A piece of the Himalayas for your creativity – natural, tough and made with a great deal of handwork.

Quality & Origin

Why lokta is so tear-resistant
The fibres in the inner bark of the daphne shrub are unusually long and hook into one another as the sheet is formed. That is exactly what makes lokta paper so resilient – you can crease it, fold it and roll it without it breaking. The shrub grows wild at altitudes between roughly 1,500 and 3,500 metres; it is hardly ever cultivated.

How it is made
Formed by hand in small workshops and dried in the sun on wooden frames.

With your purchase you support local craft in Nepal.
