Where the scent comes from
What is used is not the flower but the root. And that has a powerful smell: earthy, pungent, described by some as musty. Valerian is one of those scents you either take to straight away or not at all – there is little in between. Botanically it is a close relative of spikenard, Indian nard, which is also in the shop and also comes from the root.

When it suits
In the evening, when the day is meant to end. Best in larger rooms with a window on the latch – valerian is present. If you are unsure, light half a stick first.
