Where the scent comes from
Spikenard, also known as Indian nard, grows high in the Himalayas, on meadows between roughly 3,000 and 5,000 metres. What is used is not the flower but the rootstock, which carries a heavy, earthy scent. This is the ‘nard’ of antiquity: one of the most precious anointing oils of the ancient world, mentioned in Egyptian tombs and in biblical texts. Because it grows slowly and was heavily collected, the plant is protected today and its trade regulated.

When it suits
In the evening, and for quiet, serious moments. Spikenard is heavy and earthy – a scent for people who prefer roots to blossoms.
