Where the scent comes from
Patchouli is a member of the mint family from Southeast Asia, related to mint and sage. The curious part: the fresh leaves barely smell at all. The characteristic scent only appears once they are dried and burned – and it grows more intense over time, not weaker. In the nineteenth century, dried patchouli leaves were packed between the cashmere shawls shipped to Europe. The scent travelled with them and became the mark of genuine Indian goods.

When it suits
For larger rooms and for evenings. Patchouli is not a quiet scent – in a small room that is hard to air, it can quickly become too much. If you like heavy, dark notes, this is for you; if you are after something delicate, less so.
